Our Story...

Highly Sprung was founded in 2000, formed out of a passion to use the transformative power of physical theatre to create work that both excites and inspires children and young people. Mark and Sarah teamed up to make work that genuinely connects with its audiences and produces work that is meaningful and provides debate about real world issues.

Highly Sprung now has a strong and diverse team of excellent artists and is recognised for producing outstanding participatory projects, working with over 10,000 children and young people annually.

In 2003 Mark and Sarah established weekly workshops for children aged 4‐21. Sprungsters provides an exciting environment for nearly 100 young people to develop physical performance skills and creativity, through a variety of different opportunities.

Highly Sprung began new ventures into making work for the outdoor arts sector in 2015 and have since created two pieces, alongside a range of walkabout performances. Urban Astronaut is an award winning piece of outdoor performance supported by Without Walls, touring to festivals and arts events across the UK.

Highly Sprung is extremely proud to support the varying stages of the emerging artist and continually generates opportunities for employment for recent graduates or young people with limited professional experience. In 2016 Highly Sprung supported the professional development of four graduate artists and provided work placements for 10 young people.

We pride ourselves on working with a team of excellent artists and practitioners with a passion for working with children and young people and pushing the boundaries of physical performance.

Our Work...

Highly Sprung’s approach to physical theatre creates a physical language to tell stories and explore themes, using gesture, high-energy, often risk-taking dynamic movement, expressive communication of narrative that is spoken and portrayed through movement and places an emphasis on ensemble as core to its devising process.

Our processes for making work are founded in devising; all work we create is original and is developed in response to a theme, story or text in a process where the whole company takes creative responsibility.

Highly Sprung’s work places value on the genuine input and engagement of young people whilst maintaining high artistic standards and quality outcomes. Our style of performance and approach to working with children and young people is particularly effective in engaging new audiences, it develops a language which is at once universal and emotionally engaging. In participation work our approach quickly breaks down barriers and places equal responsibility and value on each individuals’ talent and contribution, regardless of their previous experience.
