Our Artists Reflect on 2018

January 4, 2019

Some of our artists and collaborators who worked with Highly Sprung in 2018 have shared their favourite project or event from the last year:

Sarah (Executive Director) – ‘The very great privilege of watching the Sprungsters perform with the Stratford Festival Orchestra at Coventry Cathedral, an awe inspiring backdrop for a performance which allowed us time to remember some of the lost stories of World War One. The incredible resilience and sheer determination of the Sprungsters to deliver a performance which matched the setting. Looking at the sun coming through the incredible windows and being allowed to perform in such an incredible space.’

Mark (Artistic Director) – ‘Teaching in China and India and performing in Germany - Having the opportunity to share our work and our creativity with people from all over the world, and watching their eyes light up as they realise their imagination is limitless.’

Zoe (Company Administrator) – ‘Watching the Sprungsters perform PALs, both at Coventry Cathedral with a live Orchestra, and as part of the Physical Fellowship. PALs was my favourite Highly Sprung performance when it was first created in 2014 to commemorate the start of WW1, and the reworking for 2018 for the centenary of the end of the First World War was even better!’

AJ (Associate Artist) – ‘Working with Moat House Primary on the One Giant Leap project, exploring science and maths using their bodies.’

Jess (Associate Artist) – ‘The final outcome event of One Giant Leap. Seeing all the children’s hard work put into an amazing big performance. It makes you feel so proud and happy to do what you do.’

Ben (Associate Artist) – ‘Being on tour (Roots & Urban Astronaut) with the company and spreading the word of Highly Sprung (spreading it like butter on toast!)’

Emily (Associate Artist) – ‘Performing as Hope with the Urban Astronaut in Bremen, Germany, our first International tour date with the show.’

Nicola (Vortex Creates) – ‘By the time Vortex worked on Tree in January, we had already produced 15 trees! I love designing for Highly Sprung, creating visuals to inspire and entice children further into the magic of theatre.’

Lucy (Associate Artist) – ‘One Giant Leap and the amazing team and the children who were all WILLING to get stuck into a massive, inspiring creative process! And Shrewsbury Folk Festival with Mark - cycling in the night and day and talking Dinosaurs and listening to podcasts!’

Dan (Performer) – ‘Promenading for 1km in front of 13,000 people in Fleetwood (pushing the Urban Astronaut rig down the back streets to the start of the parade was an adventure too!)’

Maz (Vortex Creates) – ‘Coventry Lights Switch On, November 2018…here we go AGAIN! Santas, 6 beards and a naughty elf, and a shop window full of goodies from the City businesses up for grabs. For one lucky Coventrian to win for Christmas! Woohoo, all that stood in the way of the reveal was a beautiful gold curtain! We watched, we waited…and finally it dropped!’

Jamie (Touchtype Films) – ‘Road trip to Lincoln to film the Urban Astronaut for Highly Sprung!’

Luke (Performer) – ‘Seeing and hearing the response from the young people in the audience of Fall Out. An amazing feeling to know a show can have such an impact on someone.’

Sarah (Associate Artist) – ‘My favourite part of my 2018 Highly Sprung year was the performance day for One Giant Leap. Seeing so many children exploring science and maths through their bodies, performing to proud teachers and parents was great!’

Anna (Performer) – ‘When on tour with Roots, Greg the tour manager when to get coffee and came back covered in mud!’

Jon (Mindriot Productions) – ‘What I always love about my job is that I can pick up my camera, travel to a theatre or venue and work with amazing creative, talented people. Working with Highly Sprung has been no exception in 2018. Each year gets better and better. There never seems to be a limit to the possibilities. I’ve watched them create, inspire and amaze young people, audiences and me personally. Every moment has been a joy and laugh. I hope 2019 will bring new adventures and ever greater possibilities.’
